Marlyn Pettersen
Marlyn Sampson Pettersen, age 79, of Vermillion, passed away on January 22, 2018, at Sanford Vermillion Care Center.
Memorial services will be 11:00 AM Saturday, January 27 at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Vermillion with visitation starting at 10:00 AM.
Marlyn was born on September 19, 1938, to Ross and Lucille (Ashcraft) Sampson in Sioux City, IA. Her mother passed away and Marlyn went to live with her grandmother, Emma Sampson, who raised her from a day and a half old until she graduated from Vermillion High School in 1956. Marlyn was married to Annar Pettersen on August 2, 1958, at Dalesburg Lutheran Church in Hub City, SD. Marlyn worked at the ASCS office in Vermillion from after her high school graduation until their first child, Julie, was born in 1965. Jill was born in 1967 and Jay was born in 1970.
She and Annar owned and operated the Chimes Cafe in downtown Vermillion from 1970 until it was sold in 1980; the family has many great memories of this time and their customers! She then worked at USD Book and Supply until she retired in 2002. Marlyn and Annar spent winters in Florida starting in 2004; in 2007 they purchased a condo in Vero Beach and enjoyed many warm winter days on the beach until selling the condo in 2016.
Marlyn was preceded in death by her parents, her grandmother, and her sister Dionne Kaczinski.
She is survived by her husband, Annar; her daughters, Julie (David) Fallan, Vermillion, and Jill (Jeff) Becker, Meckling; her son, Jay (Tiffany), Newcastle, NE; her granddaughters Kelsy (TJ) Jansen and Erika Fallan and grandson J.P. Pettersen; step-grandchildren Hope, Isabella, and William Hulit; and great-grandson Kyler Jansen.
