Madeline Smith (Amundson)
Madeline Smith, 90, of Dakota Dunes, SD passed away Friday, January 27 at the Westwood Specialty Care Center in Sioux City, IA after a brief illness.
Madeline Amundson was born March 14, 1926 near Wakonda, SD to Sigard and Gladys (Whitmer) Amundson. She graduated from Wakonda high school, attended Yankton College and received her Bachelor of Science degree from the University of South Dakota. She married Carl C. Smith in 1948 at the Pleasant Valley Lutheran Church near Vermillion.
Madeline had taught in Lake Andes, Volin and Wakonda, SD and at Meridan-Cleghorn high school for seven years and at Whittier Elementary school in Sioux City for 22 years. She was a member of the Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Dakota Dunes, the Sioux City Retired Educators, Sons of Norway and the American Association of University Women. She enjoyed playing the piano, playing bridge, her family and genealogy and would play piano as family members gathered and sang.
Survivors include two sons; Dr. Barry (Mary) Smith of Spearfish, SD, Charles (Sue) Smith of Brainerd, MN and a daughter Carol of Dakota Dunes. Seven grandchildren; Christian, Angela, Ryan, Jennifer, Christopher, Brandi and Scott as well as nine great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be 10:00 AM Wednesday, February 1 at the Holy Cross Lutheran Church of Dakota Dunes, SD with burial to follow in the Lodi Cemetery rural Wakonda, SD. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church.
