For many years I have searched the internet for "Miss Brick" who was may favorite homemaking teacher. Although many of the other girls at Carlmont High School in Belmont didn't care for her stern ways, I did. You couldn't cook until you learned about nutrition and memorized all the vitamins. You couldn't sew until you demonstrated your command of the sewing machine and your hand stitches. But if she came to school hungry, she dipped in her cash and sent someone to the grocery store to pick up provisions to make hobo coffee and biscuits for all of us which she let us make. That year must have been one of the most boring years for her fantastic life but it was one of my favorite because of her. I am an avid sewer and love to cook. She gave me the basic skill set for both. She instilled the confidence in me to know that I can do anything if I try hard enough. I was heart broken that she no longer taught at Carlmont. She only shared with us a couple of things like her working in the test kitchen. And that she designed a First Holy Communion dress that I. Magnin purchased. I am glad to hear she was such an accomplished woman. I just always knew it in my heart.

Aunt Kathleen--- May you find peace and be reunited with our family whom have passed. I hope you’re drinking whiskey, doing some jigs, playing pitch and having colorful conversations with the ones you haven’t been with over the years. I, too, am one of Kathleen's former students from Mercy High School in California. We reconnected several years later when she lived in Los Gatos, CA, and maintained a friendship up until her passing. Her zest for life and learning never waned, and delighted in hearing details of our personal and professional lives. I will miss her cards and letters--much of her handwriting illegible (even in her younger years!)--the envelope stuffed with a variety of newspaper clippings, magazine articles,old photographs, recipes, and assorted scribbled notes. She was definitely one of a kind, and a whirlwind of information. Most importantly, she was a loyal, caring woman who set an example for many.

So many memories of Kathleen Brick, teacher, tour leader, mentor and role model for me. In 1962 she taught 10th grade world history with her own unique perspective. Two years later I was one of former students who traveled on U.S. and European tour. In 1970s we connected when she lived in Menlo Park, CA and Los Gatos, CA. About 4 years ago Kathleen shared a filigree gold broach as a treasured memento. My condolences to her extended family, Kathie Kirkovics Toland, Redwood City, CA
